The Rigging Academy of SA (Pty) Ltd was opened in May 2007 in Durban, after Machine Moving & Engineering recognized the skills shortage in qualified riggers in South Africa, our NAMB Accredited trade test centre in 2010.
Our academy adheres to the requirements of South Africa’s Occupational Health & Safety Act, as well as meeting the ISO ratings and SHE assessments for a training institution. We offer various modular courses and are a registered Decentralised Trade Test Centre. MME’s equipment is made available to the training academy, which means that it is one of the best equipped training centres in SA in the field of mechanical material handling.
All training personnel are qualified Red Seal Riggers, certified NAMB Trade Test Assessment Practitioners, Assessors and Moderators trained to meet the levels of specialised training required, they have done the necessary additional courses in occupational health & safety, first aid, lifting machinery inspection etc.
We advocate the highest possible safety, health and environmental standards, so that our learners are sufficiently skilled and equipped to handle heavy equipment and machinery upon graduation.
Learnerships – 36 Months of theory and practical components consisting of NQF level 2, 3 and 4 in Mechanical Handling (Rigger) and a subsequent trade test.
Apprenticeships – 48 Months of Level 1 to 4 Modular training and practical exposure then subsequent trade testing.

The Rigging Academy of South Africa helps candidates to earn the following essential accredited courses for work on offshore oil platforms:
• Basic Rigging
• Banksman
• Advanced Rigging
This course is available to an assistant rigger, with 4 years’ relevant experience and a Grade 9 qualification, prepares the candidate for their trade test.
The Rigging Academy offers inspections on rigging equipment, compilation of lifting tackle registers and issues the necessary certificates according to the DMR18.
